Richard Burton

Returning home the next day after a wonderful final gig with The Webb Sisters at Donat’s Castle in the Vale Of Glamorgan, I was able to fulfil a small ambition, to make a pilgrimage to the boyhood home of a great hero, Richard Burton. He was born in Pontrhydyfen near Port Talbot and before I ever wrote a song I listened to him, marvelled at him, reading poetry, lights out, fellow students out raving, candle flickering, fag burning, wine in hand, spellbound. I read everything I could about him. To this day, I’ve heard nothing quite as electric as Richard Burton reading Gerard Manley Hopkins’s ‘The Leaden Echo And The Golden Echo‘.
